Foot Soldier Documentary wins Telly award
UGA’s Foot Soldier Project for Civil Rights Studies documentary, “Donald L. Hollowell: Foot Soldier for Equal Justice,” has received a bronze Telly Award.
The documentary was developed by Maurice C. Daniels, dean of the School of Social Work, and Derrick Alridge, director of the Institute for African American Studies and professor in the College of Education.

The film chronicles Hollowell’s achievements through his service as lead counsel in Holmes v. Danner, a landmark case that secured admission to UGA for Charlyane Hunter (now Hunter-Gault) and Hamilton Holmes, the first African Americans to register for classes at the university.
Game Day Recycling Initiative Calls for Participation

The UGA Game Day Recycling Initiative is seeking groups and organizations with current non-profit status to participate in cleanups after home games this fall.
The program will pay $500 per group (minimum 30 people per group) and will assign sections in Sanford Stadium in which to collect recyclable material the Saturday or Sunday after each home game.
Groups will be provided with clear trash bags, latex gloves and plastic buckets to discard beverage liquids left in plastic/glass bottles.
To participate, return the registration form (PDF is in photo gallery) by Friday, Aug. 5. Groups will be contacted no later than Friday, Aug. 12.

Oil Spill Documentary Wins Regional Emmy
UGA’s broadcast, video and photography unit at the Office of Public Affairs has received a Southeastern Regional Emmy Award for “Black and Blue: Beneath the Gulf Oil Disaster,” a documentary on the work of UGA researchers following the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Receiving the award were Steve Bell, director and editor of the documentary, Geof Gilland, computer graphic designer, and Bill Evelyn, videographer and field producer, who captured the video for the documentary.
Other staff members involved in the production were Pete Konenkamp, Kim Dillard, Andrew Rhiem and Mike Barrett.
Renovations At Health Sciences Campus Underway
A news release from UGA says the first phase of a scheduled renovation at the 56-acre Health Sciences Campus, formerly the site of the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School, will begin early this month.
Work to create a child care facility on the campus for UGA faculty, staff and students is underway, and three more buildings are set to be renovated in Phase 1.
The three renovations in Phase 1 include heating ventilation and air conditioning system of Miller Hall; office space inside Winnie Davis Hall; and major renovations of Russell Hall, which will serve as the primary classroom facility for the Health Sciences Campus.
