Schmitt has become known for her cheery disposition and comedic outlook on things. She has trained among popular American swimmer Michael Phelps at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. She has displayed humility about her aspirations during previous interviews, and has become a crowd favorite for her attitude.
Schmitt set an Olympic record while winning her last competition, completing the race in 1 minute and 53.61 seconds. She completed the race nearly 2 seconds before the second-runner-up, Camille Muffat of France. The 200-meter freestyle was Schmitt's last event of the games.Â
