Weekend Accidents Send 3 to Athens-Area Hospitals

TV, game console and shot gun among items stolen in Fowler Mill Road burglary.

ACCIDENTS

>> An Athens resident, riding a 2001 Suzuki, was west bound on Binion at a high rate of speed. Near the Herbert Road intersection, he was unable to stop and the vehicle ran off the roadway into a wooded area. After striking several trees and bushes, it came to a stop. Rucker was transported to Athens Regional Medical Hospital. The report did not indicate if any citations were issued. This accident occurred around 3:20 p.m. on August 24.

>> Around 2325 August 24, Carlos Antonio Smith of Highland Park Dr, driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, was east bound on Lexington Road. Smith said just past the Dunlap Rd intersection, several deer ran into the roadway and he swerved in an attempt to avoid striking them. Investigation revealed the vehicle crossed the west bound lane and struck a guardrail. It then crossed over the east bound lane and went into a ditch. After striking a stump, the vehicle went airborne, came to rest approximately 30 feet from the road, and caught fire. Smith and his wife, Priscilla Ann Smith, were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital. No citations were issued. (08-1684)

BURGLARY
>> A Davis Estates Road residence was burglarized between 2 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. on August 24. Clothing and a dartboard valued at $200 had been stolen. Before calling police, the resident made contact with the suspect’s brother. He placed the stolen items outside his residence and she recovered them.

>> Between 6 p.m. August 23 and 6 p.m. August 24, a Fowler Mill Road residence was burglarized. A TV, game console, DVDs, video games, a game controller, and a shotgun were stolen. The total value was $4,780. A possible suspect was named.
