1 Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Atlanta: Police

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting that killed 35-year-old Willie Williams.

ATLANTA, GA — A 35-year-old man was killed Friday in an officer-involved shooting in Atlanta, prompting an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, according to authorities.

According to a GBI release, Atlanta police officers were called to 875 MLK Jr. Dr. N.W. just before 9 p.m. after shots were fired nearby. When officers arrived, authorities said they saw a man later identified as 35-year-old Willie Williams firing a gun from across the street.

Despite commands by officers, Williams continued to fire his gun, authorities said. Officers returned fire, hitting and killing Williams.

An autopsy will determine Williams' official cause of death, authorities said.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting. Once complete, the case will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.

This is the 98th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate in 2022.
