16-Year-Old Girl Killed Outside Atlanta High School: Police

A 16-year-old boy was also injured in the overnight shooting, police said.

ATLANTA — One 16-year-old was killed and another was injured in an overnight shooting outside an Atlanta high school, according to police.

Officers responded to the scene around 2:30 a.m. Sunday after the incident at the end of the driveway of Benjamin E. Mays High School, authorities said. A girl who was in critical condition was taken to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries, while a boy was brought to the hospital in stable condition, according to police.

11ALIVE identified the girl as Breasia Powell and reported that she was set to start work Tuesday for the city.

The shooting occurred during an “unauthorized gathering,” according to Atlanta Public Schools, which noted that counseling services would be available for school staff, students and families.

"Even during Summer Break, the safety and well-being of our students and employees remains a top priority for Atlanta Public Schools," the school district said in a social media post.

City homicide investigators are continuing to work the case, according to police.
