2 Officers Injured During Shooting, SWAT Standoff In Atlanta

One officer suffered a head injury, while another was injured in the hand, after authorities say a man shot at them in Atlanta.

ATLANTA, GA — Two Atlanta Police officers were injured after being shot at while responding to reports of gunfire Saturday in the 2000 block of Cheshire Bridge Road.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the officers arrived at a Cheshire Bridge apartment around 8 a.m. on a shots fired call. They had previously responded to the location but could locate anyone, the GBI said.

The owner of the apartment allowed the officers inside the home to check for safety, and the GBI said that is when they found Alonte Ray, 23, of Stone Mountain, inside the apartment.

The officers went into a back bedroom, and the GBI said Ray "fired several shots at the officers." The officers then shot back and escaped the apartment, authorities said.

SWAT was notified and responded, engaging in a standoff with Ray, authorities said. Afterward, the GBI said Ray was taken into custody without incident.

He was transported to a hospital for evaluation and was released into the custody of Atlanta Police after being treated, the GBI said. They did not identify any potential injuries Ray may have suffered in the shooting.

An officer was injured in the head, while another officer was injured in the hand, during the incident, the GBI said.

Atlanta Police said one of the officers was grazed, and the other officer suffered lacerations.

They were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and have since been released.

Ray was arrested on eight counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement, first-degree criminal damage to property and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, authorities said.

Once the GBI's investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
