2nd Fulton Detention Officer Arrested In Ongoing Contraband Probe

In a week, the Fulton County Sheriff's Office has fired and arrested two of its own detention officers for violating oath.

ATLANTA — For the second time in about a week, a Fulton County detention officer has been arrested and fired from the sheriff's office.

Fulton County authorities said Jessie Scott, 23, was charged Wednesday on suspicion of five counts of violation of oath of public officer, two counts of distributing obscene materials, one count each of impersonating a public officer, willful obstruction of law enforcement officer and unauthorized possession of prohibited items by inmates.

Authorities said Scott was fired from the Fulton County Sheriff's Office the same day he was arrested. As of Wednesday, he was being held on a $25,000 bond at the North Annex Jail in Alpharetta.

Scott, who was hired as a detention officer on Dec. 7, 2022, was a probationary staffer at the sheriff's office. Authorities did not say what prompted Scott's probation.

Authorities said Scott's arrest was part of an ongoing probe into contraband entering the Fulton County Jail.

“When an officer chooses to violate their oath and display behavior that compromises our facilities, they must be held accountable,” Fulton County Sheriff Patrick “Pat” Labat said in a news release. “The termination of two officers ... demonstrates that we are beyond reproach to ensure the safety of all employees and the inmates in our care and custody. Our Jail Investigations and Criminal Investigations units are working diligently to investigate employee misconduct and bring these offenders to justice.”

Scott's arrest came after former Fulton County detention officer Latasha Baker was arrested on Nov. 16 for acting inappropriately with a male inmate at the South Annex Jail.

Baker was charged on suspicion of three counts of possession of prohibited items by inmate and three counts of violation of oath by public officer. She was fired from the sheriff's office Friday.

Scott and Baker are two of multiple Fulton County officers arrested this year on various charges, including assault and battery.

The Fulton County Jail is currently under two investigations, one opened by the Department of Justice and a second led by the Georgia Senate.
