Accused Gunman In Peachtree Center Mall Shooting Identified

The 34-year-old Georgia man is facing multiple charges after being accused of shooting and injuring three people in a mall food court.

ATLANTA, GA — Authorities have identified the man accused of opening fire in a Peachtree Center Mall food court and injuring three people Tuesday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday identified the man as Jeremy Malone, 34, of Morrow.

Malone was accused of shooting a man with whom he engaged in an altercation around 2:15 p.m. before walking further into the food court and shooting two other people. He then encountered an Atlanta police officer, who shot Malone, the GBI said.

At a Tuesday news conference, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum identified those injured as a 47-year-old Grayson man, a 69-year-old East Point woman and a 70-year-old Atlanta woman.

Schierbaum said Malone is a convicted felon with a past prison record that includes armed robbery and a record that includes 11 arrests.

"This is an individual that should never have been possessing a gun, an individual that never should have been placing this community in harm," Schierbaum said.

The shooting forced a lockdown at Peachtree Center, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens tweeted at the time.

"This is a busy area," Dickens said at the news conference. "This is where people work. This is where people dine while they are at work."

Fulton County Jail records show Malone was charged on suspicion of third-degree cruelty to children, aggravated assault, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies.

Once the GBI's investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton District Attorney’s Office for review.
