Arrest Made In Atlanta Driver Shootings, DeKalb Murder

Police say the silver SUV that two shooting victims described had been painted black and may also have been used in a burglary.

ATLANTA, GA — Police have arrested the driver of an SUV believed to have been used in the early-morning shootings of two Atlanta drivers on Thursday — and he is also charged with murder in DeKalb County.

At about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Atlanta Police officers found the silver SUV, which had since been painted black, and requested help from the Georgia State Patrol in making a traffic stop. A trooper stopped the SUV on Moreland Avenue, near Custer Avenue, and took the driver into custody, said police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee.

A handgun was found in the SUV, Chafee said.

According to DeKalb County Jail records, Callaway has been charged there with murder, speeding, reckless driving and attempting to elude a police officer. Although DeKalb Police have not yet publicly announced those charges, a man was shot and killed off of Flat Shoals Road Thursday morning, the same morning as the Atlanta shootings.

Two drivers in Atlanta were shot early Thursday morning just miles apart.

The first shooting happened at about 12:15 a.m. just east of the Holmes Drive exit on Interstate 20, according to the Atlanta Police Department. The driver said a silver SUV pulled up next to him and shot at him several times, eventually hitting him.

Just over two hours later, and about four miles away, another driver lost control and crashed into several other vehicles after being shot in the neck, police said. That happened on Fulton Street east of McDaniel Street at about 2:37 a.m.

That driver, too, described a silver SUV pulling up next to him and shooting at him several times. His car ended up on its side after hitting the other vehicles.

Both drivers were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and both were in stable condition Thursday morning, according to police.

On Thursday, police were investigating whether those shootings were related to a 4 a.m. shooting in DeKalb County, in which a man was killed with his wife and children in the car with him.
