Atlanta Peach Drop 2018: Entertainers Announced

ATLANTA, GA — Just days before a New Year's Eve tradition in the Southeast takes a new turn, organizers have announced the entertainers who will perform at Atlanta's annual Peach Drop.

Atlanta-based rapper Jeezy, R&B and hip-hop legends TLC and rapper and actor Tyrese will perform at the free celebration, which begins at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

After nearly three decades at Underground Atlanta, the city's 800-pound peach will descend to ring in the new year on Sunday, Dec. 31. several blocks away at Woodruff Park. The park is located at 84 Peachtree St. NE, north of Edgewood Avenue in downtown Atlanta.

Earlier this year, the City of Atlanta completed the sale of Underground Atlanta to a South Carolina real estate company, which is currently in the process of renovating the downtown attraction. Underground had been home to the Peach Drop since 1989.

Each year, the Peach Drop draws roughly 100,000 people to celebrate Georgia's own version of the Times Square ball drop.

Live entertainment is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Jeezy (formerly known as Young Jeezy) is an Atlanta-born pioneer of "trap music" who has been nominated for multiple Grammy, American Music and BET awards. He won the 2010 Viewer's Choice Award at the BET Awards for his single "Hard," with Rihanna, and the 2008 BET Hip Hop Award for Best Collaboration for "I'm So Hood."

Formed in Atlanta in 1990, TLC's original lineup consisted of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. They scored four No. 1 pop hits in the 1990s with "Creep," "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty." With more than 85 million records sold, they are the top-selling American girl group of all time and second in the world to only the Spice Girls.

Tragically, Lopes was killed in a car crash in 2002 in Honduras. Refusing to replace her, the group continued as a duo and, after a hiatus, reformed in 2015.

A former MTV VJ, Tyrese is as well known for his acting career as his music. He has appeared in the "Fast and the Furious" and "Transformers" film series, as well as roles in "Baby Boy," "Death Race" and others.

He was the 2000 winner of the American Music Award for Favorite New R&B/Soul Artist and the 2012 Soul Train Music Awards winner for Song of the Year with "Stay."

Past performances at the Peach Drop have included Ludacris, Janelle Monae, Collective Soul and Miranda Lambert.

The Peach Drop will be conducted at the historic Flatiron Building — Atlanta's oldest skyscraper, built in 1897. Festivities will be hosted by V-103 DJ and Atlanta Hawks public-address announcer Ryan Cameron and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is expected to be on hand.

According to the city, access points to Woodruff Park for the Peach Drop will be located at Auburn Avenue and Park Place, Edgewood Avenue and Park Place, Peachtree Street and Edgewood Avenue and Peachtree Street and Walton Street.
