Here are the top 5 stories today in Atlanta:

  1. Atlanta's Ukrainian community is looking on in agony, horror and fear as Russia's war in Ukraine drags into its second week. After Russian forces occupied a large nuclear plant in Ukraine, dropping shells in the area and sparking international condemnation, Tetiana Lendiel, an immigration lawyer in Atlanta who moved from Ukraine in 2012, said, "Them targeting these places is just a crime against humanity, because it's not only Ukraine that will carry the damage. It's radiation, you cannot contain it over one place." Below are links for metro Atlantans to contribute to humanitarian relief as well as to learn more about the Georgia branch of Ukrainian Congress Committee of America: atlantaforukraine.com ukrainianatlanta.org/aboutus (WABE 90.1 FM)
  2. How does a $3,000 sign-on bonus sound? That's what MARTA is offering today at a job fair for bus drivers and technicians. Additionally, new hires will also receive training for their commercial driver's license. The job fair will be from 9 a.m. to noon at MARTA headquarters at 2424 Piedmont Road. Applicants are encouraged to travel on MARTA to the event, though fee parking will also be available. (WSB Atlanta)
  3. Today is Georgia Beer Day, hosted annually by Georgia Craft Brewers Guild to highlight the state's vibrant craft beer industry as well as raise awareness and money for the industry. The 70 participating breweries across the state include a number in and around Atlanta. Check this list to see if your favorite brewery made the cut. (Patch)
  4. Former Atlanta Braves All-Star Otis Nixon is making it possible for a southwest Atlanta church to continue serving the community. Nixon donated $1,000 and thousands of dollars in food to the Beloved Community Church on Ira Street in Atlanta's Pittsburgh neighborhood after the church pantry was robbed twice in two days. On Feb. 1, thieves stole $2,000 worth of food the church had stocked to serve the homeless community and others in need, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Then, two days later, robbers came back and took whatever was left. Now, thanks to the former Braves slugger, the church pantry can once again help those in need. (Atlanta Patch)
  5. Gambling on horse races in Georgia is one step closer to happening after lawmakers this week gave early approval to move forward. Wednesday, the State Committee on Regulated Industries and Utilities passed a resolution, SR 131, authorizing the General Assembly to put to voters the question of whether to legalize pari-mutuel or betting on horse racing in the state or on simulcast races. Thursday, the committee passed Senate Bill 212 (SB 212), which would create the Georgia Horse Racing Commission to regulate betting and allow for up to five horse racing tracks in the state. Currently, the state allows for lottery gaming and funds the Hope Scholarship program with proceeds from the Georgia Lottery. (Atlanta Patch)

  • Atlanta History Center reminds us that, since its founding in 1881, music has played a special role in the life of Spelman College students, who were always given opportunities to hone their talents and interests in musical instruments and performance ensembles, including Spelman's glee club. The club regularly tours nationally and internationally. The group sang for over 3.5 billion people who watched the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. (Facebook)
