Actor and producer Lucius Baston discusses multiple projects to include, "Bigger," "Lovecraft Country" on HBO and "The Underground Railroad"
There are more than several productions on which Lucius Baston has significant roles as an actor, two are set for distribution in 2020, to include a production based off of a best selling and a Pulitzer Award Winning winning book, namely “The Underground Railroad, and one which is based off of a novel written by Matt Ruff, and published by HarperCollins, entitled “Lovecraft Country.” “Lovecraft Country” is produced by Jordan Peele with distribution forthcoming on HBO. "The Underground Railroad" is directed by Barry Jenkins for Amazon Prime Video. Baston currently appears as the character Terry on “Bigger,” which can be seen on BET Plus. “Bigger” is directed by Crystal Roberson and Charles Stone III. The creator of "Bigger" is Felischa Marye. Viacom and Tyler Perry launched BET Plus in September.
Describing one of his favorite productions that Baston has worked on so far, he spoke of
"The Underground Railroad.” “I enjoyed the production of this very much. It is such a massive production. That along with the subject matter which is addressed in the book, this definitely makes it a production that I consider to be my favorite as an actor.” Continuing, “I had the opportunity to spend some time working with director Barry Jenkins for this series. It was an unexpected dream come true to be a part of this epic project.”
In recalling the role that he enjoyed the most as an actor, Baston spoke of the role of Midget in “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,”
“This is because it is what I consider my first major role in film with the likes of Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendez. It's the first time I truly and profoundly felt that I can really do this (acting) for a living.”
Baston received his start as an actor through his work as an on-air personality and a DJ for a radio station.
“It was there that I met a young woman who was an aspiring actress at the time. After showing me her head shots, I was inspired to get some of my own. I joined an acting class very soon after and that was that. I haven't turned back.”
Lucius became a DJ at the age of 11. Stating,
“music was, and is a huge part of my life. I believe performing for crowds at block parties and school functions prepared me for the entertainment industry. I look at it as ‘art meets business’. It's the best of both worlds.”
Lucius Baston currently has a total of 64 film and TV credits. Stating, “Each role is practically a new experience that either taps into my existing tool box of life or adds to it. I get to draw from that each time.”
Baston is also an actor on Season 2 of "Insatiable" on Netflix, and Season 2 of "The Purge" on USA Network, as well as the original made for TV movie, "Keys to the City" which is on BET.
When asked what he most loves about acting, “it’s the ability to delve through the many layers of myself through the art of storytelling through the medium of film and television. Continuing,
“It's both exhilarating and fulfilling. If I can emote reactions from people who become immersed in the story as they are watching it for the entire length of a production, then as an actor, I feel I’ve my job. “I've been told that I can do drama and comedy equally well. That gives me the flexibility to do very different types of roles, for this I am extremely grateful.”
Through Baston’s work as a producer, he creates and produces diverse global content, and taking on roles as an actor when the roles he will portray strongly resonate. “Most recently, states Baston, I produced a 29 minute short with the title ‘83 Days,’ this won us many accolades, nominations, and wins on the film festival circuit earlier this year. We're very proud of it.” Stating, “My goals and dreams are pretty hefty so it's essential for me to make the move to create my own content. Lucius Baston is also a writer, and producer on a project in development, entitled “Seeing.” It is based on the story of an African American history professor who reveals the history of previously emancipated slaves who died after being forced into a post slavery concentration camp in Mississippi.
Lucius Baston is a veteran with 11 years in the Air Force. Baston discussed his military background, stating,
“I come from a family of military heritage. My father was an Army veteran. My eldest brother and I are also military veterans. My brother also served in the Air Force for 11 years.” Summarizing the significant impact which serving in the military has had on his life, “It's a big deal to me because I was shown a world I may not have ever known otherwise. I've traveled to places I could have never even dreamed of being, and worked alongside people, many of whom I’m thankful are now lifelong friends. Simply, my military career opened my eyes to a global community.”
When asked to define himself to the world, Lucius spoke of “still being molded and shaped with each experience,” and conveyed a desire to be the best person that he can be consistently. Defining his strengths due to his “constant questioning” of himself and of his perceptions of the world. Knowing, as he states, “no matter how much I think I may know, I realize that I know very little at all, compared to all there is to know. Perhaps it is in that element of myself that I am always questioning and seeking truth.”
When asked who he would love to work with at a point in the near future, “I definitely know some of the talented people who I would love to be on set with, starting with Antoine Fuqua, James Gunn, Lena Waithe, Jordan Peele, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Ava DuVernay, Spike Lee, Ridley Scott, Brad Pitt through his production company, ‘Plan B Entertainment’, and Marvel Studios. I'd love to be on Fox Network’s "The Resident", Amazon's "The Boys" & "Hannah,” Netflix's "Black Mirror" and the BBC televised program entitled, "Killing Eve" with Sandra Oh, to name a few.
Concluding, “Without the important quality of perseverance, I simply wouldn't be here. Make no mistake, if you don't go after what you want in life, it's not gonna knock on your door. You gotta get up, get out, and just do it. All is possible with a dream and action.”
