Atlanta Airbnb Hosts Welcome New Neighbors, Afghan Refugees

Nearly 100,000 Afghan refugees are estimated to arrive in the U.S. over the next year, with many needing housing. Here's how to help.

ATLANTA, GA — To help support the resettlement of Afghans in the United States and elsewhere, Airbnb announced last month it would provide temporary housing to 20,000 Afghan refugees worldwide.

Since that announcement, the need for temporary housing for Afghan refugees has continued to grow. In the U.S. alone, officials estimate 65,000 refugees were expected to arrive by the end of September, and as many as 30,000 more in the year to come.

Demand for housing for refugees is particularly high in Atlanta, and the company is urging local residents to consider hosting.

The company said that thanks to the generosity of its hosts and donors from around the world, Airbnb will have the capacity to go above and beyond its initial commitment. That is contingent upon demand for refugee housing matching the supply in communities where refugees are resettling.

The cost of these stays are funded by contributions to Airbnb.org from Airbnb and Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky, as well as donors to the Airbnb.org Refugee Fund.
