Atlanta Cuts Ribbon On Lynhurst Drive Complete Street Project

ATLANTA, GA -- The city of Atlanta celebrated the completion of its Lynhurst Drive Complete Street Project, a $6.3 million initiative overhauling the look and feel of the thoroughfare.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed took part in the ribbon cutting ceremony with Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Commissioner of the Department of Public Works William Johnson, Renew Atlanta and TSPLOST General Manager Faye DiMassimo, Atlanta City Council member C.T. Martin and community members.

Lynhurst Drive in Southwest Atlanta was the first project to break ground in July 2015 under the Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond.

“It is an honor to celebrate the completion of the first Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond project,” Reed said. “Two years ago, when Atlanta residents overwhelmingly approved the $250 million Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond, we promised to implement projects to improve the look and feel of our city. Today’s ribbon-cutting is an example of a promise kept. Lynhurst Drive now represents one of the most beautiful streets in Atlanta. I couldn’t be more pleased.”

In addition to resurfacing the 2.2-mile stretch of Lynhurst Drive, the Department of Public Works installed wider sidewalks and curbs, LED pedestrian lights, upgraded ADA ramps and culverts, street furniture and a beautiful canopy of 200 trees to line the street. The Lynhurst Drive Complete Street Project cost $6.3 million to complete, including $3.6 million in funding from the Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond.

"This is a dream come true for the Southwest Atlanta district that I represent,” said City Council member C.T. Martin. “I want to thank Mayor Reed for his vision and commitment to transforming Southwest Atlanta for the better.”

To date, the city has invested more than $131 million for infrastructure improvements in every corridor in Atlanta with more than 480 active projects. Improvements include resurfacing of streets, repairing or installing new sidewalks, additional Complete Streets under design and the renovation of public safety, recreation and municipal facilities throughout the city.

“The common thread throughout all these projects is the leadership of Mayor Kasim Reed,” said Renew Atlanta and TSPLOST General Manager Faye DiMassimo. “It is because of his leadership that there is simply no city in America with a brighter future than the City of Atlanta.”

Renew Atlanta is an infrastructure improvement program for the city of Atlanta. The $250 million program — the first major investment in Atlanta’s above-ground infrastructure in more than a decade — was the first step in resolving an infrastructure repair backlog of more than $900 million.

The Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond program was developed through years of research and more than 100 public meetings with extensive community input. The program is working to fix roads and bridges, build more than 30 miles of complete streets projects and bicycle lanes, and synchronize Atlanta’s traffic signals.
