Atlanta Jewish Community Sets 2018 Guinness World Record

Cookies for Israel; Second Helpings Atlanta delivers donated cookies to seven local Partner Agencies

The Atlanta Jewish Community celebrated the 70th anniversary of the State of Israel and sent a strong message of support by setting a Guinness world record for the world’s largest cookie flag mosaic. The last record was set in 2017 in Pakistan with a 2500 sq. ft. green and white flag. On Sunday, June 3 at Congregation Beth Jacob, the Atlanta Jewish Community beat that record as part of a project called “Cookies for Israel” by creating a massive Flag of Israel out of cookies.

A judge from Guinness World Records was on hand to confirm the record and congratulate the group on the amazing win, accomplished in just over four hours. The flag totaled over 3,200 sq. ft. and was made of 117,000 blue and white cookies. Cookies for Israel coordinators invited a Dekalb County Health Inspector to ensure the flag was assembled in a health-compliant manner, enabling the cookies to be donated to charities for consumption.

The project also served as a fundraiser for several Israeli charities, and supporters of Israel were invited to ‘sponsor’ a cookie. Several local donors covered all overhead expenses so that every dollar raised would go directly to charity. The Cookies for Israel fundraising website will remain open for several more weeks for those who wish to participate, at www.cookiesforisrael.org.
