Atlanta Man Convicted in Deadly Drug Deal

Prosecutors said Jonathan Scott killed Gerald Daniels III after accusing him of not handing over the correct amount of marijuana he bought.

ATLANTA, GA -- An Atlanta man has been convicted of killing a 24-year-old man he accused of not giving him the correct amount of marijuana he purchased during a drug deal in the southwest part of the city.

A Fulton County jury on Wednesday, April 26 convicted Jonathan Scott, 40, on charges of murder, four counts of felony murder, burglary in the first degree, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal attempt to purchase marijuana, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Officers with the Atlanta Police Department responded to a call of a person shot on Feb. 17, 2016, at the Hidden Village Apartments, which are located in the 3000 block of Landrum Drive in southwest Atlanta.

Police arrived on the scene to find Gerald Daniels III, 24, on the floor with four gunshots to his torso and another in his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives learned the victim was playing video games with a 17-year-old male when Scott arrived at the residence to purchase $35 worth of marijuana.

"The defendant left the town home but returned a short time later, arguing that the victim sold him less marijuana than he paid for," the District Attorney's Office said. "In plain view of the defendant, Daniels, III weighed the marijuana to ensure Scott that the amount was correct."

Not satisfied with the results, Scott pointed a gun at Daniels and demanded more marijuana. Daniels did not "respond quickly enough" and Scott shot the victim multiple times, the office added.

The following day, the teen who witnessed the fatal shooting informed his school resource officer of the incident. He was one of several witnesses who were able to identify Scott in a photo lineup, the District Attorney's Office said.

Scott was sentenced by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Todd Markle to life without the possibility of parole plus 65 years in prison.
