Here are the top 5 stories today in Atlanta:

  1. Condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp called for a swift end to the assault Thursday. After news of the attack was reported early Thursday morning, Kemp took to Twitter to send out words of prayer and solidarity for the Ukrainian people. "As Putin and the Russian army violate Ukraine's sovereignty through this callous, indefensible invasion, we stand with our allies and condemn this aggression of tyrants," Kemp tweeted. "We are praying for a quick, just end to this conflict, the safety of Ukraine's citizens, and the defeat of democracy's enemies." (Atlanta Patch)
  2. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, there are roughly 10,000 people of Ukrainian descent in the Atlanta metro area. And many of them have spent months fraught with worry, leading up to the launch of what President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia described Thursday as a "special military operation." As air sirens woke up Ukrainians in the capital city of Kyiv and Russian air strikes hit Ukrainian military targets while Russian tanks rolled across Ukraine's borders on Thursday, Ukrainians in metro Atlanta rushed to check on loved ones back home and considered travel plans, if necessary. 3. Although gas prices in metro Atlanta are still below the national average, AAA says prices could spike after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to the national automobile organization, the average price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. has risen five cents to $3.54 since last week, although prices through most of metro Atlanta remain below average, except in Fulton County. With the average price for a gallon of gas in Georgia $3.39, AAA warns prices will increase soon as the demand increases with spring break travel. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  4. The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival has announced winners from its 2022 line-up. Beginning Feb. 16 and continuing through Sunday, the festival showcased over 50 films from 18 countries. Free tickets are currently being offered by the festival to a virtual awards show recognizing six films across six different categories. A virtual presentation of the awards can be found on the festival's website and will be available to view until Sunday. (Reporter Newspapers)
