Here are the top 5 stories today in Atlanta:
- A woman was shot while walking outside at Atlantic Station after a fight broke out between two other groups of people, Atlanta police said. The shooting happened Sunday around 12:30 a.m, according to police, who responded to reports of a person with a gunshot wound outside a series of restaurant and entertainment venues that includes Regal Cinemas, the Bowlero bowling alley and Yard House restaurant. The 27-year-old woman was shot while walking near two groups of people outside involved in a fight. The unidentified woman, who was not a part of either group, was taken to a hospital, where she was expected to survive. Police are still working to identify the shooters. (WSB Atlanta)
- The Georgia Bulldogs can end 41 years of frustration if they can defeat Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship tonight. In 2018, the last time the two teams met in the CFP National Championship, Alabama dealt Georgia an overtime loss. Since then, the Tide have beaten the Dawgs three more times. After starting at No. 1 (Alabama) and No. 5 (Georgia) in the Preseason AP Top 25, Georgia lost its starting quarterback but still went undefeated in the regular season with former walk-on Stetson Bennett. Alabama lost one game, on Oct. 9, but hasn't dropped a game since. And this is the best Georgia has been in the 41 years since its last national title. Game time is 8 p.m. tonight at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. (CBSsports.com)
- Bed Bath & Beyond announced it is closing 37 stores across 19 states - including two in the metro Atlanta area. The first is in Atlanta at 130 Perimeter Center West, located just outside the perimeter near Sandy Springs and the mall. The second location, also outside the perimeter, is the Marietta Bed Bath & Beyond location at 4475 Roswell Road. According to the company, the stores will probably close by the end of February, and liquidation sales are already underway. This is part of a plan announced nearly two years ago when Bed Bath & Beyond said it would be closing 200 stores. In earnings released last week, sales last quarter were at $1.9 billion, which is a 30 percent decline compared to the same quarter last year. CNN reported that "ongoing supply chain issues and inventory constraints" cost Bed Bath & Beyond around $100 million. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- Last Monday and Tuesday, drivers on a long stretch of I-95 in Virginia experienced something similar to what North Georgians did in January 2014, "Snowmageddon. Or Snowpocalypse. The names don't change the calamitous circumstances," according Doug Turnbull, known as Gridlock Guy, the PM drive Skycopter anchor for Triple Team Traffic on 95.5 WSB. "With the infamous Snowmageddon anniversary on the horizon and Virginia's disaster top of mind, now is the time to make that emergency kit for the car and get into the mode of rescheduling unnecessary trips when bad weather is in the cards," Turnbull said. "Before any trip, we need to gear ourselves toward preparedness — both with materials and information." (Free: 95.5 WSB Radio; Subscription: Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- After a successful fundraising campaign and generous monetary gifts, Theatrical Outfit is gearing up for renovations at its Downtown space, Balzer Theatre at Herren's. Originally launched in December 2019 with a goal of $6 million, "The Heart of the City Campaign" – an investment in facilities, programming and endowment – was adjusted to $3.6 million due to the pandemic. According to Theatrical Outfit, it has accumulated gifts and pledges totaling 90 percent of the campaign goal, including a gift from the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation that made possible a full HVAC overhaul. "It's been amazing to witness the deep commitment of Theatrical Outfit's family of donors," said TO's managing director Gretchen E. Butler. "Even during a global pandemic, when the future was unclear, they believed in the theatre and in its mission enough to support this campaign. We're excited to continue bringing conversations that matter to the heart of downtown Atlanta for years to come." (Reporter Newspapers)
