Bicyclist Hit, Killed In Downtown Atlanta

The vehicle police believe fatally struck the bicyclist fled the scene of a traffic stop early Monday afternoon in Midtown.

ATLANTA, GA -- A bicyclist was hit and killed late Monday afternoon by a vehicle Atlanta police believe fled an attempted traffic stop in Midtown. The events unfolded around 4 p.m. Nov. 6 when police were dispatched to a call of two vehicles "possibly related to suspicious activity" along Piedmont Avenue at 10th Street in Midtown, said Atlanta police spokesperson Stephanie Brown.

Officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on a Chevrolet HHR, but the car fled the scene at a high rate of speed. Supervisors advised the officer to halt any pursuit of the Chevrolet. Shortly after that, a preliminary investigation indicates the HHR struck a bicyclist on Luckie Street near Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard, Brown added.

Atlanta officers tried to perform CPR on the victim, but Brown said he died of his injuries while en route to the hospital. The Chevrolet was recovered in northwest Atlanta, but no subject has been located or arrested, she added.
