Child Killed, Mom Injured In Atlanta Shooting

ATLANTA, GA — A 7-year-old girl died in a shooting that injured her 44-year-old mother after a dispute escalated Tuesday night in the 2200 block of Tiger Flowers Drive Northwest, Atlanta Police said.

Officers responded around 9:45 p.m. to a call about two people being shot. Police said when they arrived, they found the mother and daughter suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

They were both taken to a hospital, where the young girl died, police said. Officers rushed the child to the hospital themselves, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said.

The child who died was not identified.

About 30 minutes before the deadly shooting, two people engaged in a dispute, the chief said. One of them arrived at Tigers Flowers and opened fire, he said.

The two people knew one another but were not related, Schierbaum said.

"We are going to arrest the individual that took a child of Atlanta from this city through senseless gun violence, and you know who you are," Schierbaum said, urging the suspected shooter to surrender.

Although his department has worked to combat gun violence, he said too many guns continue to get into the wrong hands, "and they're being fired in times of anger."

Schierbaum said not only did the City of Atlanta lose a child, Atlanta Police did, as well.

"It's tragic," he said. "Our officers are mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters to young siblings, so we see our families when we arrive on scene, so we're going to try our hardest at saving a life as we can; but, when it's a child, it hits home."

Police have not identified a suspect.
