Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs Appointed to Serve on NLC Committee

South Fulton Councilwoman for District Two Tapped to Advocate on behalf of America's Cities and Towns before Congress

South Fulton Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2018 Community and Economic Development (CED) federal advocacy committee. This committee has the lead responsibility for developing NLC’s federal policy positions on issues involving housing, community and economic development, land use, recreation and parks, historic preservation and international competitiveness. The appointment was announced by NLC President Mark Stodola, mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas.

“I’m honored to have this opportunity to collaborate with other elected officials and public servants to shape policy and advocate for issues that are deeply important to the residents of South Fulton and cities across the country,” said Councilwoman Gumbs. “As a representative of a new city preparing to cast our vision for economic development, I am confident that having a seat at this table will help to propel us forward.”

South Fulton is a newly-chartered city located just outside of Atlanta, Ga. With nearly 100,000 residents and boasting the largest amount of undeveloped land adjacent to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the city is poised for massive growth.

As a committee member, Councilwoman Gumbs will play a key role in shaping NLC’s policy positions and advocate on behalf of America’s cities and towns before Congress, with the administration and at home. Gumbs also currently serves as a member of the Democratic Municipal Organization, NLC's Women in Municipal Government, and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials.

“Serving on an NLC committee is one of the most effective ways for a local official to advocate for their community in Washington,” said NLC President Stodola. “I am thrilled to have Councilwoman Gumbs join a team of local leaders from around the country working to craft our policy platform and to solve the most pressing challenges facing our communities.”
