Custody Fight Spurs Shooting Outside ATL Graduation Event

The shot was fired at about 11:45 a.m. on Thursday at an Atlanta community center, according to police

ATLANTA, GA — An argument over the custody of a child on Thursday resulted in a shooting outside a southwest Atlanta school where graduation ceremonies were taking place.

At about 11:45 a.m., Atlanta Police were called to 2800 Campbellton Rd. with a report of shots fired. Once there, they found that "a dispute regarding the custody of a child" had broken out.

At some point, one of the people involved in the argument pulled a handgun and fired a shot into the ground, Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman Officer Lisa Bender said.

The shooting happened at the address of Campbellton Road Community Center, which can be rented for private events. Bender said "some type of graduation" was going on inside, but that the shooting didn't impact that event.

The police investigation was ongoing Thursday afternoon, she said.
