Deadly Atlanta Police Shooting Investigated By GBI

A Georgia State Patrol officer shot the suspect after being called in by Atlanta Police trying to stop what they say was a stolen vehicle.

ATLANTA, GA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into a deadly Friday shooting in which a Georgia State Patrol trooper fired at a man police say was in a stolen vehicle and trying to escape a traffic stop by Atlanta officers.

At about 2:20 p.m. on Friday, APD officers located what they said was a stolen vehicle. They called in the Georgia State Patrol for help stopping the vehicle and a trooper tried to pull the driver over.

The driver didn't stop, so the trooper performed a vehicle-stopping maneuver on Doane Street, in southwest Atlanta near Pittman Park. Even then, the GBI says, the driver didn't stop and, while trying to driver away, hit an Atlanta Police Department patrol car.

The trooper fired his weapon, striking the driver — who has been identified as David Darden, 36, of Atlanta.

An autopsy has been performed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office and the GBI has begun its investigation, which is standard on officer-involved shootings in the state. When it is complete, information from the investigation will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for review.
