Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- The era of quarterback Matt Ryan, perhaps the greatest player in Atlanta Falcons history, abruptly ended Monday when he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a second-day draft pick. "This was a difficult decision, but it was made easier by Matt's professionalism and understanding throughout," Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said in a statement released by the team. The Falcons are poised to receive a 2022 third-round draft pick for Ryan, a four-time Pro Bowler. (Free: ESPN.com; Subscription: The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- An Atlanta VA employee has sparked outrage by posting a photo of him "working" in a bubble bath. Channel 2 Action News confirmed through three sources that the person in a photo posted to Instagram stories is a team leader in scheduling for the Atlanta VA Medical Center's community care office. The Instagram story shows him in a tub, legs kicked up with a federal government-issue laptop propped on the ledge. The computer is open to a March 17 staff meeting and the post's caption reads, "My office for the next hour." As one unidentified VA employee said, "It's almost as if this employee is making a mockery of all the veterans. I can sit here in my tub and relax, and you just have to wait." (WSB Atlanta)
- Where are the best places to live in the Atlanta area? Lifestyle website Niche.com has just published its 2022 ratings for Georgia municipalities, listing the top 25 towns and neighborhoods and suburbs of Atlanta. The top five Atlanta-area best places to live, according to Niche.com, are Colliers Hills North, ranked No. 1, followed by Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Atlantic Station and North Decatur. (Atlanta Patch)
- Georgia lawmakers are once again attempting to help college students who have run out of money. Senators are considering House Bill 1435, which passed the House 171-3 on Tuesday. The bill would create a program under which public and private colleges and universities could give up to $2,500 to students to help them finish school. To qualify, students would need to have already completed 80% of course credits required for their degrees. Republican Rep. Chuck Martin of Alpharetta says having students drop out for lack of money hurts the state while leaving people earning little and mired in student debt. (WRDW)
- Street racers are no match for the professionals, as a video released by Atlanta police shows. The footage of a pursuit in which APD helped Georgia State Patrol arrest a street racer was shot from an APD chopper and shows a white Ford Mustang speeding away from the scene of a street racing event, only later to be boxed in by two troopers. The driver, who has not been identified, was charged with fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless stunt driving and reckless driving. Police said he is an organizer and promoter of a local criminal street racing group. (WSB Atlanta)
