🌱 Freeze Watch Tonight + Braves Big Hitters + Atlanta Inflation

Welcome to the Atlanta Daily— your go-to for the lowdown on all things Atlanta.

(Patch)

Happy Saturday, Atlanta! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening today.

First, today's weather:

Sunny and cooler. High: 56 Low: 33.

Here are the top stories in Atlanta today:

  1. Bring in your pets and your house plants tonight because the National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Atlanta and North Georgia. The freeze watch, which includes Atlanta and the surrounding metro area, stretches from 10 p.m. tonight until 9 a.m. Sunday, when the coldest air of the season so far blows in. Temperatures could drop to 33 degrees in Atlanta Sunday morning and around freezing in the outlying suburbs. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  2. After winning the World Series for the first time since 1995, the Atlanta Braves now also lead Major League Baseball in Silver Slugger Award winners. The four players earning honors for their offensive skills during the 2021 season include the team's infield – Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley, who play first, second and third base, respectively – as well as pitcher Max Fried. Thursday's announcement of the four Silver Slugger Awards means the Braves tie for second-most winners behind the 1980 St. Louis Cardinals, according to mlb.com. (Atlanta Patch)
  3. Here's one No. 1 ranking we could do without: Atlanta's rate of inflation is higher than any other major metropolitan area in the United States. Economist Tom Smith, finance professor at the Goizueta Business School at Emory University, said it's not clear why Atlanta's inflation rate is nearly 8 percent, leading the national average of 6.2 percent. "I'm sure it has a lot to do with how goods are being transported here, what kind of income people have, and what they're purchasing," Smith said. "It's very possible that getting goods to Atlanta right now is particularly expensive, which would have upward pressure on prices as well." (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  4. Three organizations have teamed up to distribute 1,000 free turkeys to food insecure families in Atlanta before Thanksgiving. HelloFresh, Pratt Industries and Second Helpings Atlanta will be providing turkeys and sides to families in need as part of the Meals With Meaning program, a weekly food distribution effort in Atlanta. For more information, including ways to donate and volunteer, go to www.secondhelpingsatlanta.org. (metroatlantaceo.com)
  5. There are 16 candidates vying for Atlanta City government seats in the Nov. 30 runoff elections, including races for City Hall's top two roles – mayor and city council president. And the Community for a Better Atlanta wants to make sure voters are informed. To that end, the CBA released a condensed version of its voter guide this week, including scores of each candidate on the ballot. "It's critical that Atlantans stay engaged and vote in these runoff elections," said Denise Quarles, 2021 CBA Co-Chair and Head of External Affairs for the Southeast Region at Siemens. "We want CBA's scores to help voters make informed choices about who will lead Atlanta." Early voting for the runoff begins Nov. 17 and ends Nov. 24. (Atlanta Patch)
