Frequent Lightning, Heavy Rain Expected In GA Amid Severe Storms

Tuesday storms are expected to bring threatening hazards to parts of Georgia as forecasters continue eyeing the tropics.

Forecasters say Georgia residents could face heavy rain and frequent lightning with Tuesday evening storms.

Though the National Weather Service issued a Level 1 marginal risk for areas near Americus, the NWS Peachtree City office reported scattered thunderstorms could bring these hazards to metro Atlanta and surrounding areas.

Metro Atlanta could also battle localized flooding and gusty winds, according to the NWS hazardous weather outlook.

Monitoring the Tropics

Forecasters are monitoring a low-pressure system that could impact the East Coast this week.

The system's presence comes as the Atlantic hurricane season kicked off Monday.

"We'll be monitoring an area of low pressure that develops along a front off the East coast later this week," AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said in a report. "For now, it appears the system will remain entirely or predominantly non-tropical."

Though the system could remain offshore and may not turn tropical, AccuWeather surmised northward strong high pressure could help the system generate coastal hazards between Tuesday and Thursday.

This is when there is a possibility for rough surf, dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding along the Savannah coast, according to forecasters.

AccuWeather predicted 11-16 named storms and four to seven hurricanes will form in the Atlantic, which could also produce two to four major hurricanes.

Three to five hurricanes could directly affect the U.S., according to AccuWeather.
