GA Hits 1M Recorded Coronavirus Cases Since Start Of Pandemic

ATLANTA, GA — Since the coronavirus pandemic began in Georgia in March 2020, the Peach State marked a milestone on Tuesday when it hit more than 1 million recorded cases.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, there have been 1,000,872 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Georgia, as of Tuesday afternoon. The state has seen more than 19,000 deaths, and 69,000 hospitalizations over the past 17 months.

The state department still updates its numbers daily, with 4,300 more cases confirmed Tuesday afternoon, and 24 more deaths.

The state's first two cases of coronavirus were reported on March 2, 2020. They were a 56-year-old Fulton County man who had been in Milan, Italy, and his son.

Globally, more than 208 million people have been infected and more than 4.4 million people have died from the coronavirus, Johns Hopkins reported Tuesday afternoon. Of that total, nearly 37 million confirmed cases are in the United States. There have been 623,000 deaths in the U.S. tied to the virus.
