Georgia has a lot of August birthdays, according to a new study

Birthstones find themselves highly treasured in the gem world thanks to their relationship to the months of the year and also because they are just so beautiful. Due to this nature, people enjoy purchasing the gemstone that aligns with the month they were born in, hence the whimsical name ‘birthstone’. It has also become more common to buy gemstones for engagement rings, etc. Jewelry company Shane Co. created a study that visualizes the most common birthstone by state and the price tag attached to them.

According to the study, the state of Georgia’s most common birthstone is Peridot, a yellow-green gem that represents those born in the month of August. Ironically, all five states that border Georgia also have the highest concentration of individuals born in August, making Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, and South Carolina, all states whose most common birthstone is also Peridot.

It could be a southern thing, but it is more than likely attributed to the fact that Peridot is the most common birthstone in all of the United States. Currently, a total of 40 states hold Peridot as their primary birthstone, revealing that those born in August are not only highly populated in Georgia, but also majority of the nation.

Luckily for Georgians and the other 40 states, Peridot is quite the affordable birthstone in comparison to others (like a lot more affordable). Peridot’s average price is $195, whereas other gems such as ruby cost $3000 for a single carat. However, Peridot still keeps its integrity with its glimmering features and natural beauty, allowing for it to be a great gift or personal possession.

Peridot may be the most common birthstone in the U.S. but in second place with only five states is Emerald, which is the birthstone for May. For the people born in May, buying your birthstone doesn’t come cheap, with the average price for an Emerald being over $800. In third place for the most common birthstone is Ruby, the birthstone for people born in July. And we all know the ruby doesn’t sell for cheap!

So whether you were born into a month with a Peridot birthstone or a ruby stone, take pride in your birthstone! Peridot may seem super common, but it is something that defines you and your birthday.
