- The emergence of a new COVID variant first detected in South Africa is being closely monitored by the Georgia Department of Public Health. The variant, named omicron by the World Health Organization, has not yet been detected in Georgia, according to a DPH statement. "What is known is that COVID vaccination helps stop transmission of infection which prevents new variants from emerging," Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen E. Toomey said. "Vaccination is more important than ever with the emergence of this new variant and the holidays just around the corner." All Georgians 5 years old and over are currently eligible for the COVID vaccine, and booster doses are available to adults 18 and older who have finished their first series of shots. - If your holiday decorating plans include a real Frasier fir or blue spruce, this is not the year to delay claiming your conifer. Thanks to supply chain issues and climate change, a shortage of Christmas trees this season means Atlanta families should shop earlier than usual. No worries: A selection of Christmas tree farms in the metro area will help everyone check real Christmas trees off their 2021 wish lists. (Atlanta Patch)
- An Atlanta teen who was shot in the head while playing with a loaded gun on a family trip is fighting for his life in a Florida hospital. Titonaro Person said he was taking his children to a car show in Orlando last weekend when his 14-year-old son, Jaden, and his teen brother found a gun in their adult sister's luggage last Saturday. The boys were taking pictures with the gun, Person said, when it went off, striking Jaden in the head. Jaden, who has been in a medically-induced coma for nearly a week, is slowly making progress, his father said, adding investigators have ruled the shooting an accident and no charges are expected. - Atlanta Humane Society: "Her whole body was trembling. Little Kacee had barely any hair on her tiny, 3-pound body, and she was scared. She found herself in an overcrowded rural shelter at only 9 weeks old, and the shelter simply did not have the resources to care for her. But thanks to the support of donors like you, we were able to welcome Kacee with open arms. And now, with your support, we can offer that same loving embrace to many more animals in need. Give now and your donation will be triple matched! atlantahumane.org/kacee" (Facebook)

We remind drivers and pedestrians to give each other space and respect on the road." (Facebook)
