Hour-By-Hour GA Snowstorm Forecast; Estimated Totals Rise

Everything you need to know about Atlanta's first snowstorm of the season. Are you looking forward to it?

ATLANTA, GA — While the Atlanta region was already blanketed by enough snow to force school closures and nightmarish traffic jams on Friday, the snowfall has ramped up and 1 to 3 more inches is expected overnight for the area.

The first snowstorm of the season has placed roughly the northern half of the state under a winter storm warning until 10 a.m. Saturday. Communities in the warning include Forsyth, Hall, Banks, Jackson, Fulton, Gwinnett, Barrow, DeKalb, Heard, Coweta, Fayette, and Clayton counties, along with the cities of Gainesville, Atlanta, Lawrenceville, East Point, Decatur, Newnan, and Peachtree City.

The National Weather Service says to expect difficult travel conditions overnight with additional snow accumulations of up to 2 inches likely, and locally higher amounts are possible.

As of 10 p.m., snow totals ranged from 6 to 8 inches near Canton, to 2 in Lawrenceville and Atlanta.

Additional snowfall accumulations of 1-3 inches are expected overnight for much of north Georgia, with isolated higher amounts possible. "With lows below freezing for these areas, expect many roads to remain treacherous into Saturday morning," the Weather Service said Friday night.

Slick and dangerous road conditions are expected, especially on elevated bridges and overpasses. Road conditions will continue to deteriorate tonight into Saturday morning. Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times, the weather service says.

The high temperature Saturday will be near 40 degrees, so the snow won't stick around long. It will be sunny and 41 degrees on Sunday, and climb to a high of 52 on Monday.
