Near 100-Degree Heat, Showers To Usher In Father's Day In GA

"It could approach 100 (degrees) in more humid areas where there's not much wind," forecasters told Patch on Tuesday.

GEORGIA — Though Sunday could potentially come with afternoon showers, forecasters told Patch that Father's Day weekend should be steamy for those observing the yearly holiday.

After at least two weeks of downpour, the National Weather Service said Tuesday sunshine is expected throughout the week in metro Atlanta, making way for a hot Saturday.

Anticipated temperatures will rise into the 90s, eventually reaching 98 degrees on Saturday.

Meteorologist Steven Nelson said heat indices, or apparent temperatures, could also be in the upper 90s. Dew points may be in the lower 60s or near 60s this week.

"It could approach 100 (degrees) in more humid areas where there’s not much wind," Nelson said.

Columbus was predicted to reach 100 degrees by Saturday, few degrees hotter than the 91 degrees surmised for Monday afternoon.

As of Tuesday morning, the forecast did not meet criteria to issue heat advisories though that could change as the week continues, Nelson said. The work week will assuredly be a dry week, he said.

"Normally when it gets this hot, it’s often dry this time of year," he said.

A 30 percent chance of showers is expected on Father's Day in metro Atlanta. Nelson said in the summertime, the rainfall usually arrives in the afternoon or evening hours.

The rain chances flow into Sunday night and Monday, when temperatures could sit in the low to mid-90s.

On the coast, rain is expected to begin Wednesday in Savannah and is in the forecast daily through Monday for the historic city.

Georgia joins other parts of the U.S. which are battling hot heat this week. AccuWeather projected heated temperatures for the Southwest, West and Northeast regions.
