Woman Kills Self Near Polling Place: Police

It was unclear whether the Atlanta shooting Tuesday morning was related to the voting that was taking place at a nearby church.

ATLANTA, GA — A woman shot and killed herself Tuesday morning in Atlanta near a polling place open for Georgia primary elections, according to police.

Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman Officer Lisa Bender said that, at about 11:30 a.m., officers were called to the intersection of Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard and North Avenue. Lindsay Street Baptist Church — which sits nearby at the intersection of Lindsay and North — was open for voting in Tuesday's Georgia primaries.

When they arrived, police found the body of a woman. Bender said their investigation suggests that the woman shot herself.

It was unclear Tuesday afternoon whether the shooting was in any way related to the voting that was going on nearby. Bender said there is no indication that the woman worked at the polling place.

Polls did not close during the police investigation Tuesday, but the church's parking lot was blocked off for a short time, Bender said.
