ATLANTA — A suspicious letter that could be laced with fentanyl has been sent to the Fulton County Elections Office, Channel 2 Action News reported Thursday.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's office in a statement sent to Patch said state officials are responding to reported threats on election officials.

Georgia was one of multiple states to be sent a suspicious letter, the statement said, adding Fulton County is the target.

“We’re working with our state and federal partners to determine if any additional Georgia officials are being targeted. Domestic terrorists will not trample on our right to free and fair elections. Election officials should be free from fear and intimidation, which is why I’ve called on the General Assembly to increase penalties for election interference. We will work tirelessly to ensure that Georgia elections remain free, fair and secure,” read the statement.

Raffensperger's office told Channel 2 officials are trying to stop the letter before it arrives to the elections office.
