Second Helpings Atlanta Competes in Brackets For Good Tournament

Hunger is not a game: Donate, score points to help Atlanta's non-profit food rescue organization win $10,000

Second Helpings Atlanta has been selected from more than 2128 charitable organizations across the country to compete in Brackets For Good 2018.

Starting Friday, March 2, Second Helpings Atlanta will rally supporters in order to advance in an online single-elimination bracket-style fundraising tournament and win the grand prize of $10,000 in the local BFG tournament sponsored by Barnes & Thornburg LLP.

Second Helpings Atlanta is a non-profit food rescue organization whose mission is to reduce hunger and food waste in the metropolitan Atlanta area by rescuing surplus food and delivering it to those in need. The organization’s 400+ volunteer drivers use their own vehicles and are matched with routes that allow them to drive to a Food Donor’s location, pick up surplus, perishable food, transport and deliver it to a Partner Agency and return back home or to their place of work in 90 minutes or less. Through Second Helpings Atlanta, participating Partner Agencies are able to redirect funds they previously spent on groceries to provide additional core services.

“We continue to expand rapidly throughout metro Atlanta, thanks to the increase in large event pick-ups and increased awareness of our mission, our effective business model, and the impact we are making city-wide,” says Sheri Labovitz, President of Second Helpings Atlanta.

“Hunger is not a game. Managing our food rescue network to handle more than 8,000 food rescues annually requires substantial investments in staff, technology and supplies, and winning the 2018 Atlanta Brackets for Good Tournament would give us a lot of extra mileage.”

Indianapolis-based Brackets For Good pairs with corporate and nonprofit sponsors to host online bracket-style fundraising tournaments in philanthropic communities around the United States. Brackets for Good has raised more than $6.4 million for charitable nonprofits since its 2012 kick-off contest in Indianapolis.

Participating nonprofits rally enthusiastic donors to out-fundraise their opponents in order to advance. Through the excitement, localized marketing and corporate involvement, nonprofits earn increased exposure, gain access to free fundraising tools, and are introduced to new donors. Dollars from donors translate to points, giving participants the opportunity to advance in each markets’ bracket. Competing nonprofits keep donations received during tournament play, no matter how many rounds they advance. The winning organization in each tournament receives an additional championship grant.
