SNAP Changes Coming To GA: What To Know

SNAP benefits in Georgia and across the U.S. will soon increase due to cost-of-living adjustments, but it will come at a significant price tag for states.

The changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Fiscal Year 2027 will begin on Oct. 1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture first announced a raise in the maximum allotments families can receive in late August.

Through SNAP, Georgians and residents across the nation receive food stamps to help purchase groceries.

In Georgia, the program is known as EBT. As of June, there were 1,196,489 Georgia residents receiving SNAP assistance, according to USDA data published on Sept. 11.

The USDA said the upcoming SNAP changes align with the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. Aside from the 50 states, Washington D.C., Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands will also be affected by the adjustments.

Due to the impending rise in SNAP benefits, NBC 4 in Washington reported states will be tasked with covering 75 percent of the program's administrative costs. Currently, states reportedly cover 50 percent.

Experts reportedly say this may create a financial burden for states and cause program reductions.

This comes after President Donald Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law in July 2025, which minimized the federal government's fiscal responsibility for SNAP administrative costs, NBC 4 reported.

Once the adjustments take place, the maximum SNAP benefit in 48 states (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) and Washington D.C. will get a boost, the USDA said. The minimum benefit will rise to $25.

Allotments will depend on household sizes, net income and deductions.
