Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:
- Today's annual South Metro Development Outlook conference is bringing leaders of metro Atlanta's southside communities together to discuss growth opportunities and ways to advance investment and business development for the city of Atlanta and Clayton, Coweta, Douglas, Fayette, Henry and Fulton counties. Set to begin at 7 a.m. at the Georgia International Convention Center, the theme for the event, now in its 20th year, is "Transform. Innovate. Elevate." - Karen White, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of 31 books, including the Tradd Street series, will celebrate the launch of her latest novel, The Shop on Royal Street, today from 6:30-8 p.m. at Foxtale Book Shoppe, Woodstock. - Georgia's state Senate passed a bill Monday to boost gang prosecutions, giving the attorney general the authority to prosecute gang crimes statewide. House Bill 1134 passed with a vote of 50 to 5 and is now headed to Gov. Brian Kemp, who is expected to sign it. Attorney General Chris Carr has praised the legislation as a "force multiplier" that will allow his office to work with law enforcement and district attorneys. (WRDW)
- MARTA announced a $100 million increase in its initiative with the Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group within Goldman Sachs Asset Management, which aims to identify opportunities to finance new development in close proximity to MARTA. With this $100 million increase, the overall initiative target is now $200 million. A flexible, multi-product program, the Atlanta Affordable Housing and Transit-Oriented Development Initiative is designed to promote and support the development of ground-up mixed-income, TOD projects that benefit from proximity to MARTA's 38 heavy rail stations, 12 Atlanta Streetcar light rail stops and in new transit investment corridors. - According to the Atlanta History Center, ALFA, the Atlanta Lesbian Feminist Alliance, was one of the longest functioning lesbian-feminist organizations in the United States. Formed in 1972, ALFA was established to increase lesbian visibility and solidarity. Kenan Research Center has recently processed several visual collections related to LGBTQ+ history, which include photographs related to ALFA.
