- A "Stand With Ukraine" rally was held in downtown Atlanta Saturday as the Russian invasion of the country continued for a third straight day. As the Russian military's unprovoked attack forged ahead, claiming at least 137 Ukrainian soldiers so far with hundreds more injured, Saturday's rally in Atlanta called for NATO peacekeepers to head to Ukraine, and for Putin to "stop World War III." Beginning at noon at the corner of Marietta Street and Centennial Olympic Park Drive, the emotional rally wrapped up around 1 p.m. (CBS46 News Atlanta)
- Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's updated recommendations, Atlanta Public Schools has become the latest school district to make masks optional, and the City of Atlanta also loosened mask restrictions. Starting March 1, masks will be optional for faculty, staff, students and visitors in all APS schools, the school district announced Friday. Masks will still be required on all school buses, as well as for all students and staff who leave isolation after five days. Also on Friday, Mayor Andre Dickens announced Atlanta's indoor mask mandate has been lifted and public agencies affiliated with the city may now resume in-person meetings. - Effective immediately, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines said Friday it is suspending its marketing partnership with Russian national airline Aeroflot, as the U.S. government and countries around the world moved to punish Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine. Delta said it withdrew from the the codesharing system allowing Delta and Aeroflot customers to book flights on both airlines. The suspension came after Britain banned Aeroflot from flying into the country Thursday. And Saturday, the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania announced that they will close their airspace to Russian airlines. - A man was found dead with a gunshot wound near the Atlanta Beltline Eastside trail early Saturday morning. According to Atlanta police, officers were flagged down and informed of a person down in the area of Elizabeth Street and Bernina Avenue Northeast, after which they found the body in the 300 block of Elizabeth Street NE. The investigation is active and in its early stages, police said, as homicide investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. - The Georgia Senate voted to pass a bill that would ban transgender athletes from participating in girls' school sports. Senate Bill 435, sponsored by Sen. Marty Harbin (R-Tyrone), would prohibit biological males from competing in sports programs intended for biological females at public and private schools. The only exception would be if no equivalent sport existed for males, according to the bill, which lawmakers approved in a 34 to 22 vote Thursday. The bill now heads to the Georgia House for consideration. (Atlanta Patch)
