These Are GA's Most Dangerous Highways, New Survey Says

More than 54,000 fatal national crashes were examined, and experts say these Georgia highways are in the top 30 of most dangerous.

Georgia has two of the most dangerous highways to drive in the U.S., according to a new study released Wednesday by iSelect.

The Australian-based insurance company said it used data from the federal database, Fatality Analysis Reporting System, to determine its rankings of the top 30.

Analysis included crashes by state, city and road over five years. More than 54,000 fatal national crashes were examined, and experts say they found highways in California and Florida were the most dangerous due to high traffic volumes, complex road networks and challenging driving conditions.

“Road safety isn’t defined by weather or road conditions alone; it ultimately depends on the behavior of drivers and staying alert to your surroundings and anticipating potential hazards, whether that’s pedestrians, other vehicles, poor visibility or changing road surfaces, is essential," Adrian Bennet, general manager of general insurance at iSelect said in a news release.

“Following speed limits, taking regular breaks on long journeys, and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles can make all the difference in preventing collisions, no matter whether you’re driving in the USA, Australia or the (United Kingdom). Of course, many risks on the road are unpredictable and beyond a driver’s control. Comprehensive car insurance provides essential protection in the event of a collision, which is especially important for those traveling in higher-risk areas.”

The top five most dangerous states to drive in, per iSelect, are: Mississippi, Texas, Tennessee, Wyoming and Louisiana.
