Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:
- It sounds like a headline snatched from the 1890s, but a train was robbed in Atlanta on Saturday. Confirmed by the Atlanta Police Department, the reported robbery involved a train positioned along the tracks crossing Parratt Avenue in northwest Atlanta, which is located near the southern crossing of the perimeter over the Chattahoochee River. No additional details have been released. Atlanta Police said Norfolk Southern is the responding agency for this incident. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- After a weekend that saw a bit of snow and wind chills in the teens, skies cleared Sunday and a warming trend began in the region. Serving as a portent for the week ahead, much warmer temperatures and clear skies will start the week. And, according to the five-day forecast, the heat wave will continue, with temperatures reaching the low 60s. (Free: Atlanta Patch; Subscription: The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- The Atlanta Hawks have selected Chaka Zulu, co-CEO of Disturbing Tha Peace Records, as the ninth recipient of the Forever 404 Honors presented by Sharecare. The announcement was made prior to Sunday's game. Throughout this season, the Hawks are recognizing 12 local community members who are committed to serving Atlanta and embody a unique combination of cause, culture and community. On these "Forever 404" nights, the Hawks will wear their 2021-22 NIKE NBA City Edition uniforms and play on the corresponding court at State Farm Arena. (Gwinnett Daily Post)
- An additional reprieve is helping patients caught in the middle of a contract dispute between insurance giant Anthem and the Atlanta-area's Northside Hospital system. News outlets report that Fulton County Judge Rachelle Carnesale extended a temporary restraining order keeping Northside in Anthem's network. The order, which goes until April 15, also includes a provision for a settlement conference between Anthem and Northside by Feb. 25. Prior to Friday's order, Anthem members were facing the possibility that their in-network coverage for Northside hospitals and doctors would end today. The two sides have been fighting over payments for treatment for months in a dispute that could affect hundreds of thousands of patients. (am920theanswer.com)
- A spate of recent shootings at Atlanta bars and nightclubs is leaving people on edge, but a public safety expert offered suggestions for continuing to safely enjoy local nightlife. "Make sure you go to places that have a reputation of being safe and places that have a reputation of having security there," said Cedric Alexander, national public safety expert and former DeKalb County Public Safety Director. Given the fact that there have been six shootings at metro bars and clubs over the past week, Alexander said revelers should look for at least two exits, and don't drink so much that you can't make rational decisions in an emergency. Have a plan if something goes wrong, he cautioned, and it if does, try to get away from the danger immediately. (11Alive.com WXIA)
