In partnership with DIGATL and the ELEVATE Atlanta Public Art Festival, ‘Museum of the Moon’ will be presented at Underground Atlanta from October 7-9, 2022. The exhibition will include an inflatable lunar installation created by renowned UK artist Luke Jerram, moonlight and surround sound composition by BAFTA and Ivor Novella award winning composer Dan Jones, a “Moon Bounce” party, a mural by French street artist DIFUZ, Atlanta’s most interstellar DJs, the SPACE ODYSSEY light-based installation by acclaimed French visual artist Etienne Rey, and more! These events are free and open to the public.
“Underground Atlanta is the perfect host site for the ‘Museum of the Moon’ installation as we blend the innovative and immersive DIGATL exhibition with a new kind of installation – one that’s out of this world,” said Kris Pilcher, Creative Director and founder of DIGATL. “Seeing this exhibition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. - Welcome to the opening night “Moon Bounce” party! In this unique setting of interactive art, guests can dance under the natural satellite of the earth. The evening will kick off with a performance by Flight of Swallows. This ever-evolving group of musicians and performance artists will create a moody, magical, one-time-only experience on October 7 from 7-11 pm.
- Displayed at the fountain plaza will be the ‘Museum of the Moon’ lunar installation by Luke Jerram. This spherical model of the moon highlights the latest in moon science. It measures seven meters in diameter, features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface, at an approximate scale of 1:500,000 – meaning each centimeter of the internally lit sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface. Throughout history the moon has inspired artists, poets, scientists, writers, and musicians the world over.
- Step into a SPACE ODYSSEY. This immersive installation by French visual artist Etienne Rey is presented in association with France-Atlanta. It will allow guests to explore the components of light, sound, and space. A stroboscopic journey to the heart of light as a material, the crossing of SPACE ODYSSEY, a reference to the Stanley KUBRICK film, is a passage, a mental and sensory threshold situated at the meeting point of the physical world and experimentations on perception.
- A new mural by DIFUZ, presented in association with France-Atlanta, will be located on Pryor Street, near the Kenny’s Alley entrance. The artwork features characters that are weightless, linked through cultural movements representing street, pop, and hip hop culture. The dynamic composition, like a line of musical notes, is meant to give rhythm to this street art. The title of the artwork, azul ritmo, symbolizes the rhythm of music and the colors of the Mediterranean.
- Throughout the weekend, various innovative and future-forward exhibitions will be on view in the DIGATL art gallery.
In addition to the party on October 7, the Museum of the Moon and SPACE ODYSSEY installations will be open on October 8 and 9 from 11 am to 11 pm. Underground Atlanta is located at 50 Upper Alabama St, Atlanta, GA 30303.
