At the top of the list of foods non-natives might find strange is chicken and waffles. Who cares where the dish originated. Can we all agree chicken and waffles is delicious and a Southern soul food staple?

Sweet, savory, and soul-satisfyingly good, chicken and waffles come from the Pennsylvania Dutch. Or it comes from the American South from the kitchens at plantations where chicken was considered a delicacy, but pancakes and their batter much easier and more common to come by. The dish’s hybrid history has helped it to the notoriety it’s served with today.

Even the ever-popular chain Kentucky Fried Chicken is jumping on the trend, creating a chicken and waffles dish now on the menu of many franchise locations.

Holding true to her roots of older “juke joints”, Sweet Georgia’s emulates the atmosphere of the original boogie-woogie. Okay… aside from the atmosphere, their chicken and waffles are seasoned to perfection. Unlike some of the other stops on this list, Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint is more of an evening destination to kick back after a long week of work.

Chick-a-Biddy

All about convenience and efficiency, Chick-a-Biddy will make sure you can have this delicacy delivered to your door. Although a low-key place to snag a bite, Chick-a-Biddy also has gluten-free options. Needless to say, this is a necessary stop on any chicken and waffles tour of Atlanta.

South City Kitchen

There isn’t much convincing that will need to be done in order to encourage someone in the door at South City Kitchen. With classic southern fare on the menu, there’s something for everyone at every mealtime. Not to mention the adorable digs South City Kitchen boasts - they’re based out of a private bungalow in Atlanta.

Does it get any cuter? No, and the food doesn’t get better either.
