Dr. Brian Kogon Named Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Sibley Heart Center

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta announced today that Brian Kogon, M.D., pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, has been named the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Children's Sibley Heart Center.  Dr. Kogon, who has been practicing at Children's since 2003, will begin his new position as chief on April 1, 2013.

"I am honored and excited about this opportunity to lead the pediatric cardiothoracic surgery program at Children's Sibley Heart Center," said Dr. Kogon.  "I want to thank everyone for their support.  An outstanding and collaborative group of nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, ancillary support personnel, administrators, and many others, have led to the creation of one of the best pediatric cardiac service lines in the world.  I look forward to serving in this leadership role and working with our nationally recognized Children's staff as we embark on our exciting future together with innovative initiatives and research for the benefit of our patients and families."

Dr. Kogon is nationally recognized as a leading authority on pediatric and adult congenital heart disease and has published, presented internationally, and accumulated numerous prestigious awards throughout his career.  He currently serves as the Surgical Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at Emory University Hospital, and the Associate Director of the Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship at the Emory University School of Medicine, where he is an associate professor of surgery.

Kirk Kanter, M.D., who has served as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Children's for 23 years, will continue his exemplary leadership in the cardiothoracic surgery program as the Director of the Heart Transplant Program. 

"We want to recognize Dr. Kanter for his leadership and reflect on his success and achievement in developing the program into what it is today," said Dr. Kogon.  "He continues as a tremendous leader and resource to the team, and we are indebted to his personal and professional contributions."

Dr. Kogon received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati and completed his residency in general surgery and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Indiana University.  He then went on to complete his fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery at Emory University.  Throughout his career, Dr. Kogon has received various prestigious awards, including the R. Morton Bolman Award for Clinical Research and the Carl H. McKaskey Award for Basic Science Research by the American College of Surgeons, the Socrates Award for Outstanding Chief Surgical Resident by the Indiana University Medical Center, and multiple Teacher of the Year Awards for Pediatric Cardiac Surgery by the Sibley Cardiology Fellowship Program and Emory University.  His areas of interests include pediatric cardiac surgery, cardiac transplantation and adult congenital heart surgery.
