Apalachee and Winder-Barrow High Schools Receive 'Money for Education' Grants

Two Barrow County schools have received a slice of a $182,300 pie of grants awarded by the Georgia Appalachian Center for Higher Education.

Apalachee and Winder-Barrow high school are two of 21 schools to receive funds to assist in continuing to increase post-secondary enrollment rates.

James Thompson, Appalachian Regional Commission state director, and Shirley Davis, GACHE director, presented “clearing-house” style checks along with “real money” to both schools during an event in September. 

According to a news release, the schools will use these funds to implement GACHE’s model strategies to assist and encourage students to continue their education beyond high school by enrolling in and completing a post-secondary program. 

Glenn Wilson, principal at Aplachee, outlined in an e-mail what the school plans to use the funding for: 

• Pay for registration for the National Student Clearinghouse — database of student information
• Give ACT Explore to all 9^th grade students
• Host Reality Store to give 9^th grade students a glimpse into earning a paycheck, paying bills, and making financial decisions
• Pay for the bus to provide campus tours for juniors and seniors to local colleges such as Georgia Gwinnett, Gainesville State College, Athens Technical College, Lanier Technical College, etc.
• Provide incentives and refreshments for parent nights, CAT Chats, advisement nights, etc.
• Pay for postage to send home information about upcoming parent events
• Provide incentives to students who complete their college application during GA Apply to College Week
• Purchase Framework for Understanding Poverty for leadership team and professional library
