Outdoor Burn Ban Lifted, Permit Still Required
Outdoor debris such as lawn clippings, leaves and branches can be burned in small quantities. However, residents are required to obtain a burn permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission before burning.
As of today, Oct. 1, outdoor burning is permitted again in Barrow County.
Barrow County Emergency Services reminds residents, however, that there are regulations as to when and what you can burn.
“With the end of the annual outdoor burn ban we know many citizens will be anxious to start burning their yard debris,” Lt. Scott Dakin, public information officer for Barrow County Emergency Services, said in a news release. “However, we want to remind citizens that they need to follow certain regulations and safety tips in order to not lose control of their fires or cause problems for other citizens.”

Before burning, residents must obtain a burn permit from Georgia Forestry Commission by calling 1-877-OK2-BURN (1-877-652-2876) or securing a permit online at www.gatrees.org.
Regulations are in place for both public safety and air quality control. Not following these regulations can result in fines and even imprisonment.

“If citizens are going to be burning we want them to do so safely and correctly,” Dakin said in the release. “Citizens should always remember that they are responsible for their fire and the smoke from that fire.”
