Drivers Should Expect Ongoing Utility Work in Downtown Winder

The city of Winder is laying the groundwork for a complicated project known as Streetscape that is expected improve pedestrian accessibility and the overall appearance of Broad Street in downtown Winder. 

Crews were out Wednesday, Aug. 22, installing new water lines on Jackson Street, in preparation for the Georgia Department of Transportation's Streetscape project on Broad Street. 

Roger Wilhelm, water distribution director for the city of Winder, said crews are working to get all main trunk lines in place to tie in to the water lines that will have to be moved on Broad Street to accommodate work on the Streetscape project, which includes improvements to North Broad Street beginning at Porter Street and ending at Stephens Street and is expected to begin next spring, according to a report by the Barrow Journal. 

Improvements are set to include new sidewalks, handicap access ramps, lighting, signage, benches, trash receptacles, street trees, landscaping, bicycle parking racks, improved pedestrian crossings, traffic signals and drainage improvements. The project is also set to include widening of existing sidewalks and improved parking angles in some locations.

Wilhelm said work along Midland Avenue is expected to be complete this week and crews will then move to Candler Street next week.
