Feb. 19, 1980: 'One More Won't Hurt'
Man found guilty of murder receives life sentence.

After deliberating almost four hours, a jury of four women and eight men found Billy Sunday Birt guilty of murder Feb. 19, 1980, convicting him in the 1972 slaying of Winder resident Donald Chancey. Birt was convicted previously in the 1974 strangulation of a married couple and had confessed to the 1971 hooting of a Marietta doctor. After the jury announced its verdict, Birth thanked the county sheriff and deputies for treating him “so nice” and told Superior Court Judge James L. Brooks to not worry about the life sentence since “one more won’t hurt.”
