First of Three TSPLOST Meetings Draws Few Residents

A Wednesday evening forum on the proposed $1 billion regional sales tax for transportation drew few residents, the Athens Banner-Herald reports.

The Georgia Chamber of Commerce and local chambers across the state are pushing for voters to approve the tax, especially in metro Atlanta, as a way to ease traffic gridlock becase gas taxes are declining and can’t meet the state’s need, the newspaper reports. 

The tax will fund projects in Barrow County that will bring economic development to the county, Jennings said.

“We believe it’s vitally important to expand our tax base by recruiting industry,” he said.

Projects slated for Barrow County include interchanges at Ga. Highway 316 and highways 81 and 11, the West Winder Bypass and improvements to Ga. Highway 211.
