Man Installs Makeshift Speed Control Device in Neighborhood

A Winder man recently devised an interesting, albeit illegal, way to slow traffic in his neighborhood.

On Nov. 9, a neighborhood resident was on his way home when he noticed boards across the road in the 1600 block of Phillipsburg Drive. The resident, who had his wife and children in the vehicle at the time, drove around the boards and proceeded home before returning to clear the roadway.

"[The neighbor] started complaining about how [the resident] speeds in the neighborhood and about the reports he already filed about it," the deputy noted in the report.

The resident informed the deputy he had been having trouble with the neighbor and another man. The resident said the two men "often hang out together and drink alcohol." The other man, the resident said, was the one who put the boards across the roadway.

When asked why he put the boards across the roadway, the other man said he did it to slow down speeding cars.

"I explained to him it was illegal to do such a thing and advised him of the civil liability he could incur if something happened," the deputy noted. "I told him to refrain from putting the boards in the roadway and he said he understood."

No charges were filed.
