Chamber of Commerce to Host TSPLOST Meeting in Statham

The Barrow County Chamber of Commerce will hold an informational meeting about the upcoming vote on T-SPLOST at the Statham Community Center on May 16.

Pop quiz! Raise your hand if you know what “TSPLOST” stands for.

For those who don’t know, TSPLOST is a special purpose local-option sales tax geared toward a region’s transportation needs.

It just so happens that the state of Georgia has been divided into 12 regions, each of which will vote whether or not to pass the 2012 TSPLOST referendum on July 31.

If passed, the 2012 TSPLOST bill is expected to generate more than $18 billion statewide over a 10-year period from a one cent sales tax for the purpose of tackling a laundry list of transportation projects, including intersection and road improvements right here in Barrow County.

Of course, this is merely Barrow Patch’s abbreviated version of TSPLOST 101. To answer any remaining questions members of the community might have about the upcoming vote and what it could mean for our region, the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce will hold an informational TSPLOST meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the .

This meeting will mark the third of three informational meetings held around the county, beginning in Winder at 6:30 p.m. today at the , followed by a meeting in Auburn at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 14 in the Auburn City Council Meeting Room.
