Bringing Back Retro

The Ice House in Chamblee restores and makes custom built 1900s style furniture.

Don Plott has been building custom retro-style furniture for the past 10 years.

Plott, the owner of The Ice House which opened in Chamblee in Aug. 2010, started building the furniture as a hobby. "In my travels it got harder and harder to find neat coffee tables," said Plott. "So I just started one day to see what would happen and when I finished my first table it sold the next day."

The former firefighter now has 125 different designs that include tables, bars, shelves and other furniture that usually cost starting around $275 depending on the piece.

Don also restores furniture and appliances, most of which are on display within the store which used to be the business that provided all the ice for the U.S. Navy at what is now DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.

The Ice House is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and is located at 5441 Peachtree Road NE.
